CIOs In Path Of Recession
By Doug Caverly

Article Date: 2008-06-06 The Dow's down 272 points right now, and for CIOs, that's not good news. Whether you own any stock or not, there are signs the recession is squeezing budgets and, in the end, possibly cutting into job performance.
Unfortunately for CIOs, this news comes not from personal observations or a few guys' stories, but instead, from research firm Gartner. It was presented at the IT Directors' Forum.
Ian Grant reports, "Judi Edwards, an analyst at Gartner, said attracting and keeping new customers and improving business processes were the top two concerns for UK CIOs. However, budgets were shrinking by 2.5%, and as a result innovation and building business skills in the organisation had dropped down the priority list."
A 2.5 percent cut isn't much - there's still another 97.5 percent intact - yet if a recession drags on, things are liable to get worse. The situation will vary from company to company, of course, and solid CIOs shouldn't agonize over improbable layoffs. But now may be a good time to give a little extra effort and show your worth in other ways.
Eep. In the time it took to write this article, the Dow fell another 55 points. About the Author:
