Federal CIOs Rank Concerns, Suggest Responses

By Doug Caverly

Federal CIOs seem to have a lot on their minds these days, and these aren't unimportant, I-hope-the-budget-allows-for-fancy-new-keyboard concerns. Fortunately, TechAmerica and Grant Thornton found while surveying some CIOs that they've thought of some effective initiatives, too.

Let's start with the problem spots. It turns out that federal CIOs consider cybersecurity to be their biggest long-term challenge. "IT infrastructure," "IT workforce," and "IT management" could also create trouble, and then "efficiency and effectiveness," "performance management and accountability," and "acquisition" wrap up the list.

As for some solutions that should provide value, the average federal CIO is most excited about integrating systems and processes this year. Implementing security and privacy measures is supposed to net some positive results, too.

Next up, CIOs would like to see project management improvements, followed by lowering costs, and finally, transparency and performance management initiatives.

Considering the scope of things that federal CIOs have to worry about, hopefully these lists will prove helpful to people with many different levels of responsibility. Or if not, maybe it'll at least make a few folks feel better about the scale of their problems, given that a lot of complaints more significant than "no fancy keyboards" still rank below "I have to keep the government from failing."
