What Would Happen if Your Organization Didn’t Invest in Collaboration? [2012-05-14] I (and many others) have spent a great deal of time talking about why organizations should invest their resources in collaboration tools and strategies. But let's assume for a moment that you didn't. How long do you realistically see your organization going on without making this investment; 1 year, 2 years, 3 years? Do you really see your organization waiting this long?
Determining If Your Site Got Hit By Panda Or Penguin [2012-04-30] First, before you start your campaign for Penguin recovery, you should probably determine whether you were actually hit by the Penguin update, or by the Panda update (or even some other Google algorithm change).
Disruptive Technology and How to Compete for the Future [2012-04-16] Disruptive technology is the bearer of tremendous opportunity and equally a harbinger of obsolescence. Technology's impact on society and business is substantial, if not underestimated. As technology continues to become part of everyday life, it becomes disruptive in how people communicate, work, and connect. The evolution of society and technology happens with or without adaptation or understanding. And, it's contributing to a very real phenomenon of Digital Darwinism, a situation where organizations are faced with a need to adapt to markets and customer behavior or risk a loss in favor, competitive advantage or worse, irrelevance.

Do Organizations Need a Chief Collaboration Officer? [2012-02-13] More organizations are starting to deploy new collaborative tools and strategies as a core part of their business evolution to connect and engage employees. It's becoming increasingly difficult (especially at large companies) to oversee these initiatives as typically there isn't a role devoted to collaboration. Usually collaboration falls on the shoulders of employees with an existing full plate of things that need to get done (such as the CIO). So is it about time for organizations to create the role of the CCO (chief collaboration officer)?
Where are Collaboration Budgets Being Allocated? [2012-02-01] When it comes to deploying a collaboration solution for the enterprise there are a lot of things to consider especially when it comes to budgets. Towards the end of the 2009 I wrote an article called, "Companies Interested in Enterprise 2.0 Need to Take Strategy Seriously," which looked at data collected from a 2009 report on collaboration. What I found particularly shocking was the small budget allocation that strategy was receiving. Towards the end of 2011 Chess conducted another survey on the "State of Enterprise 2.0 Collaboration" and one of the topics we looked at was budget allocation.
Forrester on Web Content Management for Online Customer Experience [2012-01-04] I received a review copy of the Forrester Wave™: Web Content Management For Online Customer Experience, Q3 2011 by Stephen Powers and am just getting around to looking at it. It is a very useful document that covers a web content management market in transition. I remember back in my days with a large consulting firm that this was an emerging field and it was included within the knowledge management group I led. Now it was passed KM, at least the old school version, with the rise in Web, but also I doubt it would even be included in a KM group because of the external focus.

From Social Insights to Social Business Innovation: MIT Enterprise Forum [2011-09-26] Last night I went to an interesting event sponsored by the MIT Enterprise Forum. It was part of their Innovation Series: From Social Insights to Social Business Innovation. I have the pleasure of attending an earlier event for startups where my Darwin Ecosystem partner Thierry Hubert presented our story. It was a very useful and innovative format where both a panel of experts and the audience provided feedback on our presentation. Once we presented we could not talk but only listen. This event was quite different and played to a much larger audience but no less useful. Here is the event description:
HP Cloud Services Beta Leaves Many Questions Unanswered [2011-09-12] HP announced intentions to take on Amazon in the public cloud infrastructure as a service (IaaS) arena. CIOs Are Getting Serious About Business Rules And Decision Management [2011-08-19] My friends at Corticon had an interesting press release today about a survey they just conducted - More Than 40 Percent of CIOs and CTOs Surveyed Plan to Automate Decision Management Processes. There were some interesting results in this. First, as their headline notes, we are starting to get some serious consideration of automated decision-making, decision management, among CIOs/CTOs. 40% is a lot higher than you would have got even a few years ago and the 36% that indicated they plan to deploy a business rules management system for decision management was also a strong result. Clearly the message is starting to get through to folks that using a BRMS to automate and manage decisions improves agility and helps you build a new class of systems - decision management systems. The survey also asked what their priorities were and it is interesting to note how decision management systems could really help in these areas:
